Stage one
Step 1
Checks and references
Stage one begins with statutory checks and references with authorities and people you know. This will take 2 months.
Your agency will contact the Disclosure and Barring Service, the police, your local authority, and your employers (where appropriate). You will be asked to supply the details of at least three people who can comment on your suitability to adopt, and you will also be asked to undertake a medical assessment which will be shared with the agency’s Medical Adviser.
Step 2
Pre-adoption preparation training
Your agency will require you to complete training to prepare you for the challenges and rewards of adopting a child who has been in care. If you are a couple, there will be an expectation that you both attend all of the sessions held by the agency. The training is also a chance to meet and talk with other prospective adopters and people who have adopted.
Step 3
Proceeding to stage 2
Once the agency has collected all the required information and discussed your application with you, they will decide on your progression to Stage 2. Your social worker will let you know the agency’s decision verbally and in writing.
